What Is a Pet Health Certificate?

Almost every commercial airline requires a pet health certificate if your furry friend accompanies you on a domestic or international flight. A pet health certificate is a legal document that a licensed veterinarian must fill out to confirm their patient (your pet) is disease-free to travel out of state or abroad. The content found in the paperwork will list all the vaccines your pet has received. Other pertinent information required includes the pet's age, breed, and microchip information if lost. Each airline has guidelines (10-14 days before travel) for a health certificate to be valid.

Domestic Pet Health Certificate

If you travel with your pet nationwide by air or in a vehicle, you must show a health certificate upon request. If the paperwork is available, your pet will be quarantined once the state's health requirements have been fulfilled.

The requirements for pets to travel domestically include confirmation of rabies vaccination and a negative test result for heartworm. A licensed veterinarian must certify the required documentation 10-14 days before your flight date.

International Pet Health Certificate

The regulations for international pet health certificates vary from country to country. Remember that foreign countries expect travelers to provide the proper paperwork for their pets upon request. However, the requirements are complicated, and it may take several months to complete the health certificate process. Speak with a Jimmie Davis Animal Hospital veterinarian about the conditions for your pet to accompany you overseas. They can research the country's requirements and administer all the vaccinations or other medical tests required to allow your pet to travel abroad. Once the forms are completed, our licensed veterinarian will verify the pet health certificate. You must meet your travel requirements before 14 days of your flight date.
